Course Description

This 8-week, online course invites amateur literary critics, enthusiastic readers, and educators to engage deeply with Austen’s novels, looking beyond the familiar romances to uncover their radical potential.

You'll explore how global events such as the French Revolution, slavery and abolition, and the Napoleonic Wars shaped Austen’s world and her writing. You'll also examine the lively debates of her time between radical and reactionary thinkers and how these tensions surface in her fiction.

Alongside historical context, the course introduces a range of contemporary critical perspectives, including feminist, postcolonial, queer, and environmental readings, that open up new and sometimes surprising interpretations of Austen’s work. Whether you're a long-time Austen fan or new to her novels, you'll gain a richer understanding of her style, satire, and social commentary.

Designed for non-specialists, the course offers accessible yet thought-provoking insights and is also ideal for secondary school teachers and further education professionals looking to update their approaches to Austen and the Romantic period.
