Course Description

This event focuses on:

(1)   Theories of leadership and leadership styles.

(2)   Theories of decision-making in planned, and dynamic situations.

(3)   Putting theory into practice through the exploration of challenges that can arise in multi-agency contexts, utilising real-world case studies.

This CPD event is suitable for anyone that has leadership and/or decision-making duties. The event is especially relevant to policing, law enforcement, fire service, ambulance service, local authorities, public health, and other partners in public and emergency services. The event will also provide an opportunity for leaders and decision-makers to network in this shared learning environment.

The event is led by Dr Mike Smith, Keith McLaughlin, and Owen West, all of whom are Senior Lecturers and researchers of policing in the School of Law, Criminology and Policing at Edge Hill University.

Mike, Keith, and Owen moved into academia following careers in policing. Mike Smith specialised in the field of public order and public safety policing and was the lead trainer in the Merseyside Police Leadership Academy. Keith McLaughlin worked across Response, Neighbourhood, and specialist operational roles, including commanding complex risk operations across Silver and Bronze Public Order, CBRNe, and tactical Firearms Command specialisms. Owen West held numerous strategic leadership posts, including police dogs, mounted, Op Servator, Roads Policing, and Head of Specialist Operations.

In this event, Mike, Keith, and Owen draw from their academic research and operational experience to deliver evidence-based insights into addressing the challenges of leadership and decision-making in multi-agency contexts.
